The Black Panther was one of the very first black super-heroes to be appear in a non-stereotype roll. In 1966, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Fantastic Four readers to T’Challa, leader of the African Nation of Wakanda, and the Black Panther has been a mainstay in comics ever since. In his teenage years, Tchalla’s father (and then King of Wakanda) was murdered by a Dutchman called Klaw. Klaw’s ultimate goal was to steal the rare Vibranium, an element found only in Wakanda that posses unique properties when weaponized. T’Challa drove off the evil Klaw using his own weapons against him, showing Tchalla’s brilliance as a strategist from a young age. From there, T’Challa went to Europe and the United States in order to complete his studies. When he returned, T’Challa underwent the ritualistic trials necessary to become the Black Panther, leader of his nation. After earning the mantles of both Black Panther and King of Wakanda, T’Challa began to transform his country into a marvel of technology. Historically T’Challa has teamed up with the Fantastic Four, and several times became a member of the Avengers, because of this, he has developed strong friendships within the superhero community. In recent years, T’Challa has married the X-Man (X-Woman? X-Person?) Storm, and has gone to war with Doctor Doom. In order to stop Doom, T’Challa creates a device that renders Doom’s new Vibranium armor, and all processed Vibranium on Earth completely inert. The war ends in Doom’s defeat, but at the cost of the world’s processed Vibranium. Having done irreparable damage to Wakanda’s economy, and suffering some painful emotional damage, T’Challa moved to Hell’s Kitchen, relinquishing his titles and power as Black Panther in search of redemption as a protector of New York. As part of the Marvel Now project, Black Panther has joined the New Avengers, an Illuminati-esque team featuring Iron Man, My. Fantastic, and the Black Bolt. There are also rumours of a Black Panther movie to be released as the sleeper movie of 2014, although these are unconfirmed.
